How Categories Are Defined
Wondering how I define categories for restaurants? Here are my definitions:
RESTAURANT CATEGORIES
Food Stand: Food stands are usually stands, shops or kiosks that require you to order food at a counter and carry it away. Tables may or may not be provided by the establishment. In many cases, a food stand specializes in a particular type of food (hot pretzels, ice cream, etc.). Example: Auntie Anne's Pretzels
Fast Food: Fast food restaurants do not have any type of table service (meaning you order your food at a counter and carry it to the table yourself). Beverages may be self-service, too. Meals are prepared very quickly and are inexpensive. Tipping is not expected. Example: Burger King
Fast Casual: Restaurants in this category may offer some type of table service (such as delivery of your meal to a table) or full table service. Meals are prepared quickly and are inexpensive. Food is often presented on disposable plates or in baskets lined with disposable paper. A tip jar may be present at the counter. Example: Gracie's Place
Casual: These types of restaurants offer table service. A server takes your order and delivers your food (unless you opt for the buffet). Food is presented on non-disposable plates with non-disposable cutlery, but napkins are usually paper. Alcoholic beverages may or may not be available. Prices are generally moderate, and tipping your server is expected. This category includes a wide variety of restaurants. Example: Ruby Tuesday's
Fine Dining: The waitstaff at fine dining restaurants usually dress in a more formal manner (sometimes wearing tuxedo shirts). Alcoholic beverages, including a wine list, are available. Atmosphere and food presentation are emphasized in these restaurants. Decor is generally elegant, candlelight is typical on tables, and music is understated. Tablecloths and napkins are usually cloth rather than paper. Example: Nick's Airport Inn
OTHER CATEGORIES
Family Friendly: Though not necessarily advertised as a "family" restaurant (like establishments such as Friendly's), any restaurant in this category either offers high chairs/boosters, a children's menu or a casual enough environment that makes children are acceptable.
Limited Children: In these restaurants, kids may be welcome at certain times of the day. At other times, however, the type of customers (e.g. business lunchers or evening bar crowds) may make it less family friendly.
Vegetarian Options: Although a vegetarian meal can be cobbled together at most eateries (such as a grilled cheese sandwich and French fries at a homestyle diner), restaurants in this category either offer a wide range of vegetarian options or have a specific "vegetarian" section/meal on the menu.
